As the first #Twilight film celebrates its 15th anniversary, we’re looking back on the vampire mania that consumed the world a mere decade and a half ago. ‘Twilight’ was the catalyst for a lot of it, and no one has had more to say on the intensity, furor, and let’s be real weirdness of it all than Edward Cullen himself, Robert Pattinson. “Say it. Out loud.” Don’t worry, Pattinson isn’t afraid to over the years, he’s hated on the ‘Twilight’ films so frequently that we compiled a list of all the opinions he’s shared.
Just because Edward Cullen was the character that catapulted Pattinson to stardom, doesn’t mean the actor sees him in a positive light. "You always get weirdos like Edward who seem to attract women for some reason," Pattinson once said. "If Edward wasn’t a fictional character and you met him in reality he is like one of those guys who would probably be an axe murderer or something." Pattinson has gone on to point out the saga’s plot holes, question the “primal” nature of its fandom, and even refer to the books as “uncomfortable” to read.
15 years after the premiere of the first #Twilight movie, we can’t really picture Edward, Bella, or Jacob being played by anyone else. However, that wasn’t the case when director Catherine Hardwicke was trying to get the movie made. Hardwicke described her first impression of Pattinson as a hard sell for the studio execs, who didn’t think he was attractive enough to be a leading man. “When he came over to my house, he had black bangs for hair and was kind of out of shape because he was hanging out at the pub all the time,” Hardwicke shared. When she sent Pattinson’s audition over to executives, they replied with: “Do you think you can make this guy look good?” Um, does a vampire sparkle in the sunlight?
